Editor's comments: We don't know whether this Esther is "Esther the younger" in the 1692 Newport SDB list, or her step-mother. Either way, she was a member of the Newport SDB Church in 1692. Since she is listed as a member of the Newport SDB Church in 1692, and since the average age for baptism in that period was about age 25 (the typical earliest age is 18, the latest age is 36), then she would have been born around 1670. However, if she was 18 at her baptism (a typical early age), then she was born about 1674. Even if she was baptized at the Biblical age of accountability (age 12) she would have been baptized no later than 1680; any of these possibilities would make Katharin (who died 22 Feb 1684/ 5), her mother.
We have a conflict in information among the sources. According to HISTORY OF THE SEVENTH DAY BAPTIST CHURCH, SHILOH, NEW JERSEY, 1737- 1987, p. 33, Esther died before her husband, John Jarman, signed the Shiloh Church Covenant in 1737. Soon after the signing, he married Catherine Ayars, daughter of Isaac Ayars, and niece of first wife Esther. Mack & Pooler, however, say that she was still living in Dec. 1770. (op. cit. p. 1547.) It is possible that Mack & Pooler have confused this Esther with another; but who?
SALEM COUNTY N. J. GENEALOGICAL DATA, Compiled by H. Stanley Craig, Vol. I, Merchantville, NJ, H. Stanley Craig, ND, p. 12. Esther (Ayres), dau. Robert, m. John Garm, will 1716/17. This no doubt refers to Robert Ayars' will.
