Robert Eyre (a member of the ancient Wiltshire family of that name
descended from Humphrey le Heyr, of Bromham, Wilts, who went to the
Holy Land with King Richard I -- see Eyre, of St. John's Wood), the
Founder of this branch of the family in America, left England in 1682 and
settled in Bethel Township, Penna., where he managed the plantation of
his father-in-law, Francis Smith (who purchased, in 1681, 5,000 acres
of land from William Penn), until his arrival in America in 1686, b. nr.
Devizes, Wilts, 30 Jan. 1649; m. 1682, Anne (d. 1726), dau. of Francis
Smith, of Devizes, and had issue, a son.
!NOTE: Father may be Thomas Eyre, Governor of Devizes, keeper of the
person of King Charles I, prisoner, 1645, at Hurst Castle, outside of
Devizes. This Robert was born the day Charles I was executed. He
emigrated to Chester and Delaware Counties, having married the daughter
of Francis Smith, of Kennett, who had a Penn Land grant. (From Barbarann
